Como to the Dolomites: drive through the heat, arrive above it

2026-08-10 · Como → Canazei, Italy · drive

Four and a half hours of driving, and the day is built so that most of it happens inside an air-conditioned car during the hours you would otherwise be hiding from. You leave a lake at 200 m and go to bed at 1,450 m — the single largest temperature change of the trip, and it is free.

How this day was shaped

  • The long driving block is placed 10:15–13:15 and again 15:30–17:30, straddling the daily maximum deliberately. An air-conditioned car is the safest place to be at three o'clock in a heat dome, so the schedule treats driving as shelter rather than as dead time.
  • Trento is the lunch stop because it is almost exactly halfway, it has arcaded streets that stay shaded, and the castle interior is cool. A picnic on the Garda shore was considered and rejected: no shade, and the lake road is slow.
  • Nothing outdoors is scheduled between 13:00 and 15:30 anywhere in the valley floor. The Adige corridor around Trento and Bolzano is one of the hottest places in the Alps.
  • Arrival walk kept short and shaded — after four hours in a car, at altitude, on the first evening, ambition is misplaced.

From your booking

  • Checkout Como 10:00. Check-in Canazei from 14:00, and reception closes at 21:00 — that is the only hard edge in the day.
  • Hotel Villa Adria is in Alba, about 1.5 km up-valley from Canazei proper.

    Load the car, Como

Pack, fill every water bottle you own, and get on the road before eleven.

The apartment has private parking, so loading is easy. Fill water bottles here rather than buying on the motorway — you will want more than you expect, and service-area prices are what they are. Start the car's air conditioning a few minutes before you load the last bags.

    Depth · 1 note

A car parked in August sun reaches interior temperatures far above ambient within half an hour. Ventilate before you cool: open both sides and let the hot air out first, then close up and run the air conditioning.

    Heat
Fill at least two litres per person. Cool the car before loading, not after.

Trento — arcades, lunch, and the Castello del Buonconsiglio

Halfway. Frescoed façades, arcaded streets that stay in shadow, and a castle with the best medieval fresco cycle in the Alps.

Trento is an Alpine city that looks Italian and was Austrian until 1918, and the mixture shows on every façade in Piazza Duomo. Eat under the arcades, then go into the Castello del Buonconsiglio — thick walls, cool rooms, and the Torre Aquila, whose Cycle of the Months is worth the stop on its own.

Why here, why now: The midday stop is indoors under thick stone, in a valley that is one of the hottest places in the Alps. Everything outdoors in Trento was deliberately left out of the plan at this hour.

    Depth · 3 notes

The Council of Trent sat here on and off from 1545 to 1563 and produced the Counter-Reformation. The sessions were held in the Duomo and Santa Maria Maggiore, both a short walk apart.

The Torre Aquila frescoes, painted around 1400, show a year of aristocratic and peasant life month by month — one of the very few surviving secular medieval cycles anywhere, and unusually candid about labour.

Trento sits in the Adige valley, a north–south trench that funnels and traps heat. It is regularly among the hottest places in northern Italy, which is precisely why this stop is scheduled indoors.

Alba di Canazei — arrival walk along the Avisio

Drop the bags and walk the river path under the pines. You are 1,250 m higher than you were at lunch.

The Avisio runs through the valley floor below the hotel, with a flat gravel path following it through larch and spruce. After four hours in a car it is the right length and the right gradient — and the air here is a different substance from the air in Trento.

    Depth · 2 notes

1,450 m against Trento's 194 m is roughly 7–8 °C of difference from lapse rate alone, before you count the shade, the river and the mountain shadow that arrives early in a deep valley.

Alba is a Ladin-speaking village. Ladin is a Rhaeto-Romance language, not a dialect of Italian, and it is still the first language of much of the Val di Fassa — the road signs are trilingual for a reason.

    Heat
No longer the problem. From here the concern flips to afternoon thunderstorms and cold evenings.
    Storm
Valley floor and tree-covered — safe in weather that would make a ridge dangerous.
    Water
Fountains through the village; the tap water is excellent.

    Dinner in Alba or Canazei

Ladin food, which is not Italian food — dumplings, barley, smoked meat, poppyseed.

The valley's cooking sits between Italy and Austria and belongs to neither: canederli, casunziei, barley soup, game. After a fortnight of lake fish and tomatoes it is a genuine change, and the portions assume you have been walking uphill.

    Depth · 2 notes

Casunziei are beetroot-filled ravioli, dressed with butter, poppy seeds and smoked ricotta — a dish that reads as eastern European and is entirely local.

Book if you can. Alba is small, and August is the one month it fills.
