Como, slowly — and a long afternoon indoors

2026-08-09 · Como, Italy · walk

A deliberately thin day before a four-hour drive. Garden and swim in the morning, then a genuine shelter block through the afternoon, one small cool museum, and the lake at dusk. If the day turns out to be the hottest of the week, this is the one to spend almost entirely in the apartment — and that is a legitimate outcome, not a failure.

How this day was shaped

  • Content deliberately reduced. The previous two days were long and tomorrow is a transfer; stacking a third full day into a heat dome is how people get caught out.
  • The whole 12:00–16:00 block is scheduled as shelter, indoors, with nothing to miss by staying put.
  • Villa Olmo's gardens are placed at 08:00 because the lawns are open and unshaded; the silk museum is placed in the afternoon because it is indoors and cool.

From your booking

  • The apartment has air conditioning. On a 40 °C afternoon that is the single most useful amenity of the trip — use it rather than working around it.

The day

    Villa Olmo gardens

Neoclassical villa, formal gardens to the lake, free to walk, empty at eight in the morning.

Built in the 1780s and named for an elm that no longer exists, Villa Olmo now belongs to the city and its gardens are a public park. The lakeside section has mature trees and real shade; the formal parterre in front of the villa has none at all.

    Depth · 2 notes

The villa has hosted Napoleon, Metternich and Garibaldi at various points — a fair summary of who was passing through Lombardy in the nineteenth century.

Exhibitions are held inside during the summer; when one is running, the interior is both interesting and air-conditioned.

    Heat
Keep to the tree line along the water. The gravel parterre in front of the villa reflects hard.

    Lido di Villa Olmo

The town swimming lido, right next to the gardens. Cold water, umbrellas, a bar.

A pool and a lake-swimming area with loungers, five minutes from the villa. Getting in the water before eleven means doing it while the sun is still tolerable and the place is not yet full.

    Depth · 1 note

Swimming in the lake here is normal and safe; this is where Como swims, not a tourist facility.

Shelter block — back at the apartment

Four hours indoors with the air conditioning on. This is a scheduled stop, not a gap in the plan.

Lunch from the shops, then out of the heat entirely for the worst of the afternoon. Nothing in Como is worth doing between noon and four in this weather, and pretending otherwise is how a good trip turns into an endured one. Repack for tomorrow's drive while you are here.

Why here, why now: Explicitly scheduled as shelter through the daily maximum. Nothing was dropped to make room for it — there is genuinely nothing here worth doing in the early afternoon of a heat dome.

    Depth · 2 notes

This is what the scheduler would call a shelter day, and naming it explicitly matters: an itinerary with an honest four-hour hole in it is more trustworthy than one that quietly fills the hole with something you will regret doing.

Heat exhaustion builds cumulatively across days. Two long days in a row is exactly the setup where the third one goes wrong.

    Heat
The single most effective heat measure available to you all week is this room with this air conditioning. Use it.
    Water
Drink more than you feel like. Thirst lags dehydration by hours.

    Four hours, on purpose.

    Museo della Seta (Silk Museum)

The machines that made Como rich, kept in a cool building on the edge of town.

Looms, dyeing vats, printing frames and warping machines, most of them from working mills that closed within living memory. It explains, better than any label in a shop, why every silk scarf in the world seems to come from this one small city.

    Depth · 2 notes

Como still finishes a large share of the world's luxury silk — the weaving has largely moved east, but printing and finishing stayed, because the expertise did.

The collection is essentially industrial archaeology assembled by the people who ran the machines, which is why the explanations are unusually practical.

Villa Geno and the eastern shore at dusk

The quieter shore, opposite the one everybody walks, with a fountain and a swimming spot at the end.

East from Piazza Cavour the promenade is less trafficked and the light in the evening comes back off the water at you. Villa Geno sits at the end with a small park, a jet fountain out in the lake, and steps down for a last swim.

    Depth · 1 note

This side of town gets the evening sun on the far shore, so it is the better direction to walk after six and the worse one before ten.
