Bolzano: a refrigerated iceman, then a thousand metres up

The last full day, in the hottest city in the Alps, and the plan is the same one the locals have used for a century — get out of the basin. A cable car leaves from four hundred metres away and puts you on a plateau at 1,200 m in twelve minutes. Before that, the one museum in Italy where the exhibit is kept colder than the visitors.
How this day was shaped
- The entire middle of the day is spent at 1,200 m on the Renon plateau. Bolzano at 265 m is regularly the hottest place in Italy; the Ritten cable car is the single most effective heat move available and it leaves from the middle of town.
- Ötzi placed at 09:30 — indoors, refrigerated, and ahead of both the heat and the queue.
- The Earth Pyramids walk sits at 13:15, which would be indefensible at valley level. At 1,200 m with tree cover on the approach it is a different proposition — and it is the reason the whole afternoon was moved uphill rather than dropped.
- Talvera promenade and Castel Roncolo were both considered for the afternoon and rejected: the promenade is fully exposed and the castle walk is an open climb up a south-facing slope.

Via dei Portici and the Duomo
The arcaded main street at market hour, and a cathedral with a green-and-yellow tiled roof.
The Portici run four hundred metres of continuous arcade, still on their medieval plot widths, with the fruit market at the western end on Piazza delle Erbe. Get there while the stalls are being set up. The Duomo, a minute away, has a filigree sandstone spire and is cool inside.

The plot widths along the Portici have not changed since the twelfth century, which is why the shopfronts are all narrow and deep — the buildings are medieval commercial real estate that never got redeveloped.
The cathedral's roof tiles in green, yellow and black are a Central European habit, not an Italian one. Everything about Bolzano's architecture is arguing about which direction it faces.
Piazza delle Erbe has held a market since at least 1295 and still runs six mornings a week.

South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology — Ötzi
A 5,300-year-old man, his clothes, his copper axe, and the arrowhead that killed him. Kept at −6 °C.
Ötzi was found in 1991 melting out of a glacier on the Austrian–Italian border and is the best-preserved prehistoric human ever recovered. The museum shows the body through a small refrigerated window and gives the rest of its space to his equipment — which is the genuinely astonishing part, because almost none of it should have survived.

He was murdered. A flint arrowhead is lodged in his left shoulder, severing an artery; there is also a deep cut on his hand and blunt trauma to the head. He bled out. This was established only in 2001, a decade after his discovery.
His copper axe rewrote the dating of copper working in the Alps. He also carried birch fungus with antibacterial properties, tinder, a half-finished longbow and 61 tattoos, most positioned over joints that show wear — possibly a pain treatment.
His last meal was ibex, red deer, einkorn wheat and bracken, eaten roughly an hour before he died.
The refrigeration is not a display flourish. The body is held near the conditions that preserved it, and the viewing window is small because opening the chamber at all is a conservation risk.

Funivia del Renon to Soprabolzano
Twelve minutes and 950 metres of altitude, from a station in the middle of town. The best-value cooling in northern Italy.
The cable car leaves from beside the railway station and climbs the wall of the basin to the Renon plateau. You watch Bolzano shrink into its bowl beneath you and step out at the top into air that is roughly six degrees cooler, moving, and smelling of pine. Lunch up here.
Why here, why now: The whole afternoon is relocated 950 m above the city because the Bolzano basin is unusable in the early afternoon in August, and this is the fastest, cheapest altitude available anywhere on the trip.

The Ritten has been Bolzano's summer escape since at least the sixteenth century — the merchant families kept houses up here specifically to sit out the valley heat, a practice called Sommerfrische.
The original 1907 line was a rack railway with a hair-raising gradient; the modern cable car replaced it in 2009. The narrow-gauge Rittner Bahn still runs across the top of the plateau in its 1900s carriages.
950 m of altitude is about 5.7 °C of lapse rate before you count wind or shade. That is a larger temperature intervention than any building in the city can offer.

The Earth Pyramids of Renon
Clay spires with a boulder balanced on top of each one, standing in a wooded ravine. The approach is under trees; the viewpoint is not.
Rain erodes the moraine clay except where a stone caps it, and what is left is a stand of thin towers each wearing its own rock hat. They are actively changing — pillars collapse and new ones emerge over decades. The path from Collalbo runs through forest most of the way and opens out at the viewing platform.
Why here, why now: This is an exposed viewpoint scheduled in the early afternoon, which would be unacceptable at valley level. It is defensible here only because it sits 915 m above the city with a forested approach — and even so, keep the time spent on the open platform short.

The formations exist only where glacial till has the right clay content: enough cohesion to stand, little enough to erode fast. The Renon examples are among the best developed in Europe.
Each pillar's lifespan is measured in decades. The ones photographed a century ago are mostly gone.
Take the Rittner Bahn from Soprabolzano to Collalbo rather than walking the plateau — the narrow-gauge line from 1907 is part of the day, and it is shaded.

Down the cable car, and the Talvera at dusk
Back into the bowl once it has started to give the heat up, and along the river path under the plane trees.
The Talvera promenade runs beside the river between the old town and Castel Roncolo, with vineyards on one bank and plane trees over the path. Fully exposed in the middle of the day, which is why it is here at the end of it. The light on the Dolomite peaks to the east goes pink at about this hour.

The vines you pass are Santa Maddalena, a Schiava-based red grown on these slopes and drunk locally rather than exported.
Castel Roncolo, up the valley, holds the largest surviving cycle of secular medieval frescoes anywhere — Tristan, Garel, a whole courtly world. It shuts too early for today, but it is the obvious thing to add if you ever come back.

Speck, canederli, Lagrein, and a plateau of Alps behind you.
South Tyrolean cooking one more time before the drive to the airport hotel tomorrow. Lagrein is the local dark red, grown on the gravel just outside the city and almost never seen outside the region — this is the place to drink it.

Speck is cold-smoked and air-dried, which is the compromise between the Italian habit of air-drying and the Germanic one of smoking. The whole region is that compromise, in most things.
